Surely, this is the most complicated vehicle that Alfa Romeo has ever produced. Not only because it’s firing into the heart of the car market—read: mid-size crossovers—but that it’s only available as a hybrid, with three different powertrains…and in several unique configurations.

It must look and perform like an Alfa Romeo, but in such a competitive segment, reliability will also need to be fitted as standard equipment.

This article is only scratching the surface for this all-new vehicle—full press release and specifications are included at the bottom.

powertrains (rest of the world)

  • ‘Hybrid’ front-wheel drive models: 130 or 160-horsepower four-cylinder 1.5-litre engine; 7-speed dual-clutch transmission; 48-volt 15-kW electric motor
  • ‘Q4’ all-wheel-drive models: 275 horsepower plug-in hybrid 3-cylinder; up to 80 km electric-only range

powertrains (North America)

  • 256 horsepower gasoline turbocharged 4-cylinder engine; 9-speed automatic, standard all-wheel-drive
  • 272 horsepower plug-in hybrid (similar to the Q4 elsewhere); 1.3-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, six-speed automatic, a 90 kW (~150 hp) rear-axle electric motor and a 15.5-kWh battery pack.

interior & trims

  • telescopic instrument panel, aluminium shift paddles
  • Alfa Romeo ‘D.N.A.’ driving mode selector (Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficiency)
  • multicolor backlights for interior and dashboard
  • two large screens, one for instruments and the other, infotainment and climate
  • Alcantara and neoprene interior trim (vegan leather available)
  • Super (base model) and Ti (upgrade); Super + Sprint option pack or Ti + Veloce option pack are also available

hybrid driving modes for the Tonale

  • e-Creeping: uses the electric motor to provide the start-up normally available in vehicles with automatic transmission, at a speed that can vary from zero mph to the equivalent of the petrol engine idling in first gear, or in reverse
  • e-Launch: to start the vehicle using only the electric motor
  • e-Queueing: for the car to keep going in a traffic jam, in a stop & go pattern
  • e-Parking: to simplify parking maneuvers, making them practical and quiet

other notes

  • choice of 17, 18, 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels
  • ‘Q4’ plug-in hybrid: zero to 62mph in 6.2 seconds
  • ‘Q4’ plug-in hybrid: full charge takes 2.5 hours when using a 7.4kW fast charger

What are your initial impressions of the Alfa Romeo Tonale? Perfect size, options, and blend of performance…or do you think it’s a tough sell?
