This ain’t your roadster-loving grandma’s MG, but it might be your practical grandpa’s. In Europe, the MG5 station wagon is MG’s next release in a rapidly growing lineup of family-focused crossovers.

Like MG of old, all models in the lineup are intended to be affordable—so a flashy, segment-leading EV this is not.

Two battery options with up to 400 kms (248 miles) range is nothing to sneeze at, nor is the Standard Range version’s 177 (130 kW) horsepower and 280 Nm (206 lb-ft) of torque. Interestingly, buyers can’t get the big battery with the punchier motor.

If range is a priority, output drops to 156 horsepower (115 kW). If power is a priority, range drops to 320 km (198 mi). Claimed battery sizes are 50.3 kWh and 61.1 kWh.

This is a family car, though. With DC fast charge capability, a tow rating of 500 kg (1,102 lb), adaptive cruise control, heated seats, LED headlights, 360° parking camera and a PM2.5 cabin air filter, it should fit into suburban life quite well.

Its software is arguably one of its best points, but not for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto support. MG calls its system “Vehicle-to-Load”: included with the car is a household power strip you can use to power electric things…and even charge other electric cars.

Figure it handy for camping or a Worst Case Ontario situation.

MG or not, look for this feature to become more and more commonplace.
